SSL Certificates:-

The Internet is full of plenty of acronyms: FTP, HTML, HTTP, ISDN, and more. One especially important acronym - because it deals with private and sensitive information - is SSL or Secure Socket Layer.
Web servers and web browsers use SSL to encrypt data as it is transferred back and forth. The encryption process takes the data entered into the website and mixes it up before sending it to the server. The server receiving the information is then able to decode the data so it is once again usable. Because it is encrypted, even if an eavesdropper did come across the data, they wouldn't be able to do anything with it. This allows users to type a credit card number into a website without having to worry whether or not a third party will have access to that information.

An SSL Certificate indicates to a server that the site in question is, in fact, secure and trusted. By establishing that trust, data can be sent freely. There are various agencies - called Certificate Authorities (CAs) - who act as trusted third parties to issue digital certificates. These certificates help establish a site's credibility, as well as securing and encrypting any information transferred throughout.

It's important for a company to ensure their customers' security and peace of mind. A website should include a seal - issued by the CA - so users know the site has an SSL Certificate. The site should also include a privacy page. Users will know a site is secure if they see the URL begin with https:// (instead of just http://) and/or if the browser they're using indicates it's secure. For instance, some browsers include a pad lock icon to show the site is secure.

To register for an SSL Certificate, a company will need to contact a CA and send them information about their website and company - the domain name, business licenses, charter documents, or something similar. Once that information is sent, the CA authenticates the website and issues the certificate - a process that can sometimes take only a few hours.

The SSL Certificate verifies that a website is able to securely transfer information. Any site dealing with credit card numbers, personal information, or anything else an individual may not want exposed to third parties should have an SSL Certificate. This gives the user comfort in knowing any data they input to the website will be kept safe and secure.

This can make a world of difference to someone who is considering purchasing a product or service. Most people won't buy from a website if they don't feel that the site is secure, so prominently showing a business's security can make a big difference for the bottom line.
